A hardbound book can be spread open without the binding coming apart. For my own part I find that I usually have a vague idea of a word's spelling, enough to track down the correct form. My approach has been to look up the word I intend to use before I write it down. The premise underlying this dictionary seems to be a writer will know a word has been misspelled and moreover misspelled in the way the dictionary lists.
