Sebastian Haffner was an eyewitness to the takeover of Germany by Hitler and the Nazis in 1933. He tried to understand and explain why so many German citizens got caught up in the Nazi insanity and why others were so ineffective in opposing the Nazis. Being a talented writer and a law student at the time, as well as a young man with a young man's usual concerns for his own future, his writing is both thoughtful and personal, and very readable, making this a fast and fascinating, if somewhat painful read

The Meaning of Hitler (German: Anmerkungen zu Hitler) is a 1978 book by the journalist and writer Raimund Pretzel, who published all his books under the pseudonym Sebastian Haffner.

The Meaning of Hitler (German: Anmerkungen zu Hitler) is a 1978 book by the journalist and writer Raimund Pretzel, who published all his books under the pseudonym Sebastian Haffner. Journalist Sir Max Hastings called it 'among the best' studies of Hitler; Edward Crankshaw called it a 'quite dazzlingly brilliant analysis'. The book analyzes the life and work of Adolf Hitler and is divided into seven chapters, each treating a different aspect of the man.

by. Adolf Hitlers Vater war ein Aufsteiger ) Der Sohn begann als Absteiger. In the 1970's Haffner brought his formidable analytic abilities to bear on Hitler himself with the publishing of this book, which became a huge bestseller in Germany. The tone is more sober and philosophical in comparison with his memoir, the work of an idealistic young man. It's a historical and psychological examination of Hitler, written so concisely and thoughtfully that it puts other Hitler biographers to shame.

Finally, Haffner confronts the most disturbing question of all: Could another Hitler rise to power in modern German? . Beginning with Hitler's early life, Haffner probes the historical, political, and emotional forces that molded his character. In examining the inhumanity of a man for whom politics became a substitute for life, he discusses Hitler's bizarre relationships with women, his arrested psychological development, his ideological misconceptions, his growing obsession with racial extermination, and the murderous rages of his distorted mind. Finally, Haffner confronts the most disturbing question of all: Could another Hitler rise to power in modern German?

This reviews the Nazi period with focus on Hitler, but the book is organized in a different way: Biography, Mistakes, Crimes,.... It also points up the failings of the Nuremburg Trials. It has become a classic in Germany

This book deals with Adolf Hitler's actions and answers nearly all questions about him. I couldn't think of an important "mystery" to Hitler Sebastian Haffner couldn't explain. Probably the best book published about the Führer and very short too! What I liked was that he still writes in an objective style even though the whole world sees Hitler as "evil" (by the way, one of the questions Haffner explains: why Hitler was "evil").
"Anmerkungen zu Hitler" is the book in the original language (German) and uses academic language so I would recommend it to those who can understand German very well or who want to have a challenge!
