Description

With much of the book devoted to an elegantly written narrative history that provides context for the diary entries the book is very readable. While Eight Bells and Top Masts is an interesting window into the life of a tramp steamer at the end of the era of the tramps it is also a love letter to the declining British empire. Christopher Lee is a British writer, historian and broadcaster, best-known for writing the radio documentary series This Sceptred Isle for the BBC, which recounts the history of Britain from the Romans to the death of Queen Victoria, the 20th century and the British Empire.

The book does come out as being a truthful one and I love books about ships and the sea, I'm a great fan of Patrick O'Brien and I used to read Conrad as a child.

The time is the late 1950s. It is the end of an era. The end of the trade in which an old converted coal-burning ship with a Chinese crew and a handful of British officers would tramp from port to port, picking up cargo where it could, never knowing where it, and they, would be heading next. Chrisopher Lee, author of the BBC radio series "This Sceptred Isle", worked on these ships as a boy, growing up quickly as he tramped around the world. He worked with rough, strange and fascinating men and faithfully recorded all he saw and heard in diaries that form the basis of this record.

Ever wonder what life was like aboard a tramp steamer before the container ship? Here is a first person look at what it was like toward the end of the tramp steamer era. I read the book and enjoyed the anecdotes very much...is it a literary work, no. Would I buy it again, definitely !
