Old Glory (Picador Books). A book such as Old Glory could be considered travel writing, but such easy classification would fall far short of the mark. He incorporates history, some incredible descriptive prose, and sparse but welcome bits of dry British wit. In fact, his Englishness is part what makes the book so interesting - you see America, warts and all, from the eyes of an outsider. Raban is a stylist, who reveals himself to the reader slowly. I found him to be a very interesting, complex, slightly tortured figure.

Old Glory is a travel book by Jonathan Raban. It is the winner of The Royal Society of Literature's Heinemann Award and the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. Old Glory describes Raban's voyage down the Mississippi River in a 16-foot aluminium "Mirrocraft" powered by a 15 . Johnson outboard engine.

Frick’s American Garden T he little towns were going past as smudges on the far shore: Brownsville, Stoddard, Genoa, Victory, De Soto-every one a temptation to be resisted. I was too immersed in the. risky business of keeping moving to care very much about the landscape I was passing through. It was all I could do to keep the boat headed steadily into the waves.

Winner of the Royal Society of Literature's Heinemann Award and the Thomas Cook Award. A stunning success...Raban takes us floating through the heart of America...more successful than 99% of the books about America since De Tocqueville's Democracy in America' New York Times 'Mr Raban has a keen ear, but, for the river itself, he has to evince not only a keen eye but a capacity to use a painter's palette. He gives us the strong brown god in all its rage, sullenness and beauty' Anthony Burgess, Observer 'This is a fascinating and enchanting book. It is never dull, and yet there are facts aplenty to be picked up on the way. I enjoyed every mile of the journey' Evening Standard

Old Glory. The first book I ordered was torn more than expected, plus it smelled so musty I threw it away because it was supposed to be a Christmas gift. So I recently ordered another copy hoping it was better. I am supposed to gel it by Thursday.
