Calli Torcher hesitated at the top of the steep stairs from her attic bedroom to the first floor, took a breath, braced a hand against the wall and gritted her teeth at the prospect of pain. No matter how carefully she set her feet, she’d jar herself, then stop and pant through the agony. Or she might fall and end up in the hospital.

The newest Summoning adventure is just as good as the first one. Robin Owens has a wonderful imagination and her worlds are so full of life that they breathe. Her writing is some of the most readable I have found and the flow of her adventures is smooth and enchanting.

The third Exotic has been summoned, Calli Torcher, is a wounded horse whisperer. She was hurt while Barrel RAcing causing physical hurts, and her father is a cold-hearted man who has mentally abused her. At 24 she is washed up as a racer due to her injuries. Her father coldly sells her horse and pretty much tells her she has no place there. Retreating to her special place in the mountains, she cries until she is caught by bells and ringing leading her to Llandrana.

When she arrives she is welcomed not only by the other exotics but by the Volarans, the flying horses. The volarans had all left the marshalls and returned home so they were forced to summon a new exotic for the volarans. Calli is able to talk to the flying horses and they give her all the love she has never had from her family. Alexa and Marian tell her about the snap and about the choosing. The cavaliers want her bonded as quickly as possible so she will stay in Lladrana.

Merrec Gardpont is a Cavalier, very low in status. He and his volaran serve in the company of Lady Hallard's. Like every unattached person in the castle he leaves a token on a table. Calli has agreed to find a mate through a love potion. She studies over four offerings and finally accepts Merrec's.

Togather Merrec and Calli both want the same thing a home and family, but Calli was damaged by an infection and cant have children. So they decide they will adopt. Calli has no thought of returning to Terra. It is here she will fight and serve to have a love, a home, a family.

The action is fast and intense, unexpected twists and turns are around every corner. There are others with their own plans for the new exotic. Calli and Merrec have destinies to be fulfilled.

I love it, every journey to this land is filled with love, adventure, and surprises. Do not miss it.

Hmmmm... I really enjoyed the first 2 books of this series and was looking for more. But this book is starting to look a lot like the other books. And to be honestly the main "storyline" is complete by the middle of the book and the remainder is filled with Calli trying to complete her quest and all that rot.

Honestly, I feel that the "quest" that each summoned person should be the focus of the book, but its really not. I know this is a romance but its also an epic fantasy which spans 5 books. I think a lot more could have been done to expand the world, flesh it out. Instead we keep meeting the same people from the other books and visiting the same places. And there's really very little mention of the big bad evil aside from random raids.

Calli's side story about needing love and a family and all that was grating to me. Same goes with her ass of a husband who basically deserted her when she needed him.

Perhaps I'm biased, I like the world that Robin created but I could not relate to or like either Calli or her husband, and this book did little to expand the world which was created in the first 2 books. I'm going on to book 4 in hopes that things improve.

A bit cozier than the two previous books in the series but no less enjoyable. Definitely more character driven, the story delves deeply into the thoughts and emotions of the two main characters - Calli and Merrec. Everything from past horrors, childhood trauma, and the strain of marrying a stranger is explored. One can't help but feel Calli's anguish as she struggles to be her own person while also learning to adjust to Lladrana society and her new husband plus deal with her new role as protector of the flying horses. Really loved the growing camaraderie of the three Earthwomen. Owens has done a masterful job of creating three distinct personalities who don't always get along yet will risk their lives to keep each other safe. Fans of the series will appreciate how more of Lladrana culture and society is revealed, particularly the realism of war profiteering, traitors, cowards, and the apathy of some of the populace who are content to let the Marshalls and Chevaliers fight and die to protect them from the invading monsters. Throw in the delicious twist that has the reader wondering if the all-good Singer is actually a creepy, manipulating autocrat, and you have a good solid read. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
