Description

Ed Greenwood created an amazing universe! Then filled it with one-dimensional characters. I freaking LOVE the Realms books, but the whole Elminster series has turned completely predictable.

Ed Greenwood created an amazing universe! Then filled it with one-dimensional characters. I honestly had to struggle to get through this book. It was uninteresting except for a few places. I only trudged my way through because I'm nearing the end of The Sundering series and I want Elminster's entire backstory.

Now, with a title such as this, you'd think that it would center on the main character Elminster and his offspring. Not so. The story is set in Cormyr, a kingdom that is constantly besieged by the Red Wizards of Thay, and is under threat from neighbouring kingdom of Sembia and Zhentile keep. To make matters worse, there is a & conspiracy being plotted by several powerful nobles to take over the kingdom for their own nefarious needs.

One of the stories that didn't come off as a tired Mystra rehash. This was a fun read and gives some more juicy background as to El's life.

I enjoyed the twists and turns of the various characters. It seems to be a story within a story, which is not a bad thing. Overall I really did enjoy this book.

Ed Greenwood writes another epic tale. Although Elminster barely is in this one you will enjoy the usual style of the author. It does differ in one aspect of his tales. This one is more or less one long chase scene. I have all of Ed's books on my shelves and am now getting these awesome tales on my Kindle. On dead trees or as an e-book, Greenwood never disappoints.
Had alot of hope for this book just to be disappointed. Love the realms but through reading Elminster just way to dull. Way better books in the realms than this.
