Our charmingly annoying Bastien gets a book of his own and it is witty. There is more character struggle in this book than in previous, but what can you expect from the "Black Sheep" of the immortals? There are also a few more short scenes where Seth is the main focus and we get an introduction to a mysterious new character from Seth's past. Of course previous characters also play a role and it is always interesting to read about them interacting with some of the newer characters. New allies, a new side of an old foe, several large scale clashes with mercenaries and one between two immortals, all in all an exciting read.

The recap of events & information from previous books isn't terribly repetitive, but it is becoming a bit irritating. As I re-read these books I am struggling to figure out in what order they should be, I am reading them on kindle and they are not labeled by number in the title or on the cover. I find I am either having to open every book, wait for it to load and then see at the top which number it is or look them up. The titles are too similar for me to remember the order without checking.

One of my favorite of the series. I have read this multiple times and even have listened to this series on audio. I LOVE it! Bastien was a fav character because of the way his immortal life started. He thought he was a bad guy and learned he is a good guy. That causes all kind of complications in him along with his fellow immortal guardians. They don’t like him nor do this trust him. Melanie Lipton is one of the few that look past his gruffness to see the real him.
I seriously laughed at his antics and how he purposely irritated the immortal guardians. I love all the characters in this book. Cliff is one who has always captured my heart because of the situation he unwittingly found himself in. It was a great idea to add in a couple characters from the “other side”
Melanie is sweet and smart. She gets involved in a lot of action during this book. She is the perfect gal for Bastien. She has a no nonsense take on certain things which raises her value to the IGs. She is very protective of Bastien when the others pick on him...or they pick on him. Numerous times I chuckled at either her or Bastien.
Seth, David and Chris...these guys are great. I love this series. This is a stand alone but please read book 1 first because that is the first time we meet Bastien and it’s helps add to his character in this book.

Bastien is an immortal who once believed himself a vampire; making his choice to live among vampires developing and training them into organized actions against Immortal Guardians; also causing him to seek a way to stave off the madness that plagues vampires as they age. His deep hatred for Roland specifically, stems from the belief that particular immortal killed his beloved sister centuries earlier. Melanie is a gifted mortal doctor who works in the network seeking a way to help vampires who have allied with them to avoid the madness vampirism brings. She has developed a friendship with the few she works with. Bastien and Melanie meet and their story begins. The stories intertwine and follow the lives of the Guardians and the humans with whom they work closely each day. Enjoy!!!!

This book is a work of art. There's so many amazing things that I loved about it that I don't even know where to start! Let's go simple and start with our stars. We meet Melanie briefly in book 2, but she really shines in this book. She's strong and brave for a human, and she's more than willing to stand up for who and what she believes in. Bastien is the villain from book 1, so naturally he's not exactly voted most popular with the Network or the Immortals, but we get to know a side of him that no one else seems even interested in glimpsing. They're compelling as individuals, but as a couple they're even more so.

I think what might be the most amazing part is that the book in no way felt long or drawn out, yet SO MUCH is incorporated into it. We see Bastien and Melanie's romance progress, we get a little insight into Richart, Etienne, and Lisette, revisit Ami a little, get more insight into Seth, and meet a new player Zach. That doesn't even include the conflict! The big bad is perhaps darker in this one than in the last two. Then, right as we're getting our pretty little bow at the end, a bomb of sorts is dropped. OMG. And she does all this without leaving the reader lost or confused or let down in any way, ever.

Dianne doesn't usually end the books on a cliff hanger, though she will leave you with something that makes you want more, but this time she leaves you aching, screaming for the next installment! She's an absolute artist. The mystery she builds is just masterful, both long term and short term. The fight scenes are perfect, because she includes you and keeps you riveted, but without bogging you down with excessive details. With these abilities, she's woven a very powerful tale.

Phantom Shadows is every bit as good, if not better than its two predecessors. The comraderie between the various people, the character development, the unrelenting excitement of the plot make for a story that is so gripping that you just want to climb into it. It's a masterpiece that I believe every paranormal romance fan should read, and I can't get enough!
