Description

He wrote numerous dark fantasy and horror stories.

His disillusionment with the medical profession can be seen in the stories "The Fourth Seal" and "Into Whose Hands".

I read this book when it was first printed in 1974. The story is captivating. Karl Edward Wagner has an extensive vocabulary that enhances the presentation of this tale. It was just as enjoyable this time as it was the first time I read it.

Kane had studied the passage with obsession, brooded countless hours over the secrets hidden within other scraps of legend and black lore, seeking to wrest every particle of ancient knowledge from beyond the veils of time.

Prologue For miles uncounted the forest stood supreme. Giant trees reached their branches heavenward, fighting for sunlight and fresh air. h their dense foliage existed another world than that of the open sky above-the twilight of the forest floor. There the cool gloom was broken only by scattered rays of sunlight that crept through the ceiling above, to melt upon the thick bed of leaf mold and pine needles which covered the floor. No undergrowth flourished, except in spots where an arboreal giant had fallen and.

In the booty captured in a savage raid, Kane discovers a ring, a bloodstone, which is the key to the power that lies buried, inactive but not dead, within the forest

Wagner was the true inheritor of Howard's sensibility. Moreover his variance is better suited to novel form than REH, although his prose does not quite crackle like Howard at his best. No one does. Even better is a sly pink Floyd reference to the song title " several species of small furry animals gathered together in cave and grooving with a pict" from ummagumma in the first few pages...I love that kind of thing.

A friend recommended the Kane series but I picked it up more out of boredom than anything else. But it was quite good. Different than I expected. A large dash of Conan but with the depth that comes from contemplating what life would be like for an immortal man. An anti hero with a genuine motive. Supporting characters were great as well, well drawn in only a few words.

A definite pick up for the swords and sorcery fan who wants something that plays within the rules of the genre while still feeling fresh.

Along with Glenn Cook's Black Company, John Gardner's Grendel, Gene Wolfe's Book Of The New Sun and John Crowley's Little Big, this is American fantasy fiction at it's best.

Most of his work for me is either 4 or 5 star. Some would say this is one of his better works but no matter what it is engaging.
