Legacy of the Force: Inferno. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 11 years ago. I have come in during the middle of this series and, despite having only a partial view, this book is the best in the series. The book opens with Jacen manipulating Tahiri, who apparently is still swimming in grief over Anakin. A rather sorry state of affairs for a Jedi, if you ask me.

Finally the Legacy of the Force series begins to move along. Inferno by Troy Denning is the sixth book in the series with three more to go. Up until this point the books have been marked by way too much concern about Jedi philosophy and how to do things the right way. In the meantime Jacen Solo, now Darth Caedus, has run wild, taken complete control of the Galactic Alliance, made the required sacrifice, and become a Sith. Everyone knows they have to stop him, but they seem unwilling to take the next step beyond the rules of Jedi doctrine to get the job done.

The murder of a major character by Jacen was an important loss to the saga of Star Wars and to the remaining non-Sith characters but really not much of a personal sacrifice for Jacen. I won’t mention the name of the person killed. Suffice it to say that it was a major character. Mr. Denning has included an excellent funeral scene and does a good job of describing the agony felt by some of the main characters who remain.

Through most of the book Jacen seems unstoppable and increasingly evil. He goes so far as to have his soldiers take over the Jedi Academy at Ossus, taking the Jedi children hostage, and showing no remorse at any action he deems necessary. He ultimately does have some people stand up against him, and the book ends with a huge fight involving Jacen against Luke and son Ben. All of the action scenes are well-written. Alema Rar continues to pop up and cause trouble. The plot definitely continues to thicken. I hope that will continue in the last three books of Legacy of the Force.

Going in I have to say, I was very interested to see how the characters were dealing with the events in the previous book, "Sacrifice",the answer to that of course, is not very well, particularly, the characters of Luke and Ben, as is to be expected. But I was more interested in the trickle-down effect, this would have on characters not related to the Skywalker family. And it too, was about what I expected. This was an action-packed installment from beginning to end, and, with plenty of emotional elements as well, and a maybe-not-so-unexpected betrayal along the way. I must admit that this has been my favorite in the series so far. Now on to "Fury".

For SWEU fans, Inferno blends just the right amount of intrigue, lightsaber duels, and space battles, but the strength of any book is in its characters. Luke and Ben must deal with the aftermath of Mara's death. Jacen completes his transformation, and Tenel Ka begins to see the light. Finally, Han and Leia must face the truth about Jacen. It was inevitable but heartbreaking.

The only plot weakness was in the Sith. All of a sudden there are a whole bunch of them. They've been sitting around *hiding* since the days of Palpatine, directing the action from afar. I regret that they may become important elements of the series; because right now, they feel contrived.

So much happens, but the experience was not rushed. An excellent read, I could not put it down.

At the end of the Kindle edition, there is an interview with the authors Karen Traviss, Troy Denning, and Aaron Allston. I always enjoy reading about what goes into a book or series, especially with so many authors working on it at once. It was enlightening to see the thought processes that went into writing "Legacy of the Force" and the death of Mara Jade, and what they thought about it. The interview added a lot of insight and I'm glad I read it.

Inferno is a strong entry in the Legacy series, featuring many of the best elements of Star Wars: light v. dark, space combat, lightsaber duels, heartbreaking betrayal, and Wookiees! It’s a thrilling read – leaving you turning the page anxiously with every plot thread. Looking at Legacy as a whole, this is one of the best, most cohesive novels. In particular, I was glad to see Alema’s Korriban plot. I think it introduced an element of plot that was needed for this series. Ultimately, Inferno takes many of the main characters to pivotal, decisive moments surrounding their support of Jacen and the Galactic Alliance. If you’re hesitant about reading Legacy for whatever reason, I’d venture into it so that you can experience the ride this novel offers.

The reason I gave one star is not because of the writing or the author but because the publishing company screwed up so badly that the book is UNREADABLE! I have the first-edition mass-market paperback of this novel, and it skips from page 76 straight to 173. What are supposed to be pages 77–124 are instead 173–220, which are repeated again later in the book where they are supposed to be. So now I have to try to find an edition of the book that doesn't have this stupid printing error. Nothing like being engrossed in a good book, turn the page, and WTF IS GOING ON WITH THE PAGE NUMBERS?! ????
