Translated by the contemporary Tibetan scholar Tulku Thondup, these selections have taken much of their inspiration from the earthy, nomadic life experiences of several Tibetan lamas of the Nyingma lineage, notably Patrul Rinpoche (1808-1887), the First Dodrup Chen Rinpoche (1745-1821), and the Third Dodrup Chen Rinpoche(1865-1926). In addition, there is one piece by the central Tibetan visionary and mystic, Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa(1730-1798).

If you are interested in Tibetan Buddhism, I've found that it's much more useful to start of with reading some biographies, rather than reading theoretical works. Buddhism is, by definition, a matter of practice and experience, not of letters and concepts.
According to his obituary, Talbott discovered Buddhism in college, when he made friends with the famed philosopher Alan Watts. Watts introduced Talbott to Zen Buddhism and Thomist philosophy. Eventually, Talbott met the famed Trappist monk Thomas Merton. While working in Asia, Talbott met the Dalai Lama and went on to spend the winter of 1968 studying with him as a private student.
