Enlightened Living: Teachings of Tibetan Buddhist Masters. Shambhala Publications: Boston, 1990. By Steven D. Goodman. Translated by the contemporary Tibetan scholar Tulku Thondup, these selections have taken much of their inspiration from the earthy, nomadic life experiences of several Tibetan lamas of the Nyingma lineage, notably Patrul Rinpoche (1808-1887), the First Dodrup Chen Rinpoche (1745-1821), and the Third Dodrup Chen Rinpoche(1865-1926). In addition, there is one piece by the central Tibetan visionary and mystic, Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa(1730-1798).

If you are interested in Tibetan Buddhism, I've found that it's much more useful to start of with reading some biographies, rather than reading theoretical works. Buddhism is, by definition, a matter of practice and experience, not of letters and concepts.

According to his obituary, Talbott discovered Buddhism in college, when he made friends with the famed philosopher Alan Watts. Watts introduced Talbott to Zen Buddhism and Thomist philosophy. Eventually, Talbott met the famed Trappist monk Thomas Merton. While working in Asia, Talbott met the Dalai Lama and went on to spend the winter of 1968 studying with him as a private student.

This collection of translated writings addresses the issue of engaging in secular life with Buddhist intentions. It includes practical advice by great Tibetan teachers such as Paltrul Rinpoche and Jigme Lingpa. Combining folktales and poetry, their teachings pieces impart the essence of spirituality in a pithy, direct fashion."There are three things that you should place:Your body on the seat;Your mind in your body; And relaxation in the mind. There are three things that should be in conformity:Conversations with friends;Clothes with the country; And mind with the Dharma."Paltrul RinpocheTulku Thondup is a living advocate of the Tibetan tradition, He has translated and published many books and has taught at Harvard University.
