Sand painting, type of art that exists in highly developed forms among the Navajo and Pueblo Indians of the American Southwest and in simpler forms among several Plains and California Indian tribes. Although sand painting is an art form, it is valued among the Indians primarily for religious rather. Sand paintings are stylized, symbolic pictures prepared by trickling small quantities of crushed, coloured sandstone, charcoal, pollen, or other dry materials in white, blue, yellow, black, and red hues on a background of clean, smoothed sand.

The authors of Box of Dreams use art to connect numerous spiritual traditions together, focusing on Roman Catholic Labyrinth walking, Buddhist altar building, Tibetan sand painting, and Native American doll making, among other traditional art forms that share common themes and techniques.

Sacred Rituals takes the reader along the path of the spiritual, by revealing several different types of rituals and a bit of the history behind them. From walking a Labyrinth to Prayer Flags and even ritual baths, the book gives nice examples of different types of rituals, with wonderfully inspiring quotes throughout from many different spiritual paths. It is beautifully illustrated, as well. A wonderful addition to any spiritual library.

This book provides ideas for rituals from many different cultures and traditions. It is beautifully illustrated and a joy to read. I purchased one for our local Woman's Shelter and then needed to find another for my use.

In Sacred Rituals, London and Recio not only suggest how we can usher the sacred into our everyday lives, they also urge us to explore the sacred in a deeply personal way: not as something from without that we seek to touch, but as something that emerges from within, almost like a memory. What so impresses me about this book is how effortlessly it rises above the standard how-to approach to conducting ceremonies from a variety of cultures. Instead, it asks us to engage ceremony as a way of delving deeper into our own sacred natures, and then savoring what is revealed. It is also beautifully illustrated. Highly recommended.

I have always been interested in ways to connect to a higher power or deeper meaning. I bought this book one day on a whim. I liked the cover and several of the topics were things I have been interested in.

I would only read a chapter at a time so I could think about the topic it presented. Most chapters had a way you could apply the ritual in your own life with materials you already had on hand. If you wanted to buy materials, they were common, in expensive suggestions given by the author. I appreciate this as other books I have tried to read suggested activities that were so un-approachable. The exercises in this book focused more on ways to make each ritual your own not on perfection or how to recreate something someone else made.

I found myself looking forward to each new chapter and ritual. This was a great introduction to many different traditions. I loved that it didn't focus on a specific religion or type of ritual. Like the author, I have a wide range of interests and am eager to learn new things.
