Charles Haddon Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) was an English Particular Baptist preacher. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers". He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist tradition, defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith understanding, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day.

I have a paperback copy of this devotional book that I love so I downloaded the Kindle Version. That is a big disappointment. There is no way to navigate to any particular place in the book. NO table of contents or dated devotions other than just suddenly coming across a month. Like June or May written on a page. So that is why I gave it only a 3 star rating. The content is good but the navigation in the book is terrible.

This book is truly inspiring. I orginally purchased "Evening by Evening" to make sure that I would meditate on God's word before I went to bed. But It has become a great inspiration to me. I look forward to reading "Evening by Evening" each night before I go to bed. Mr.Charles Spurgeon had a great passion for God and Christ and he generously displays it through out his daily devotions. He continually encourages the believer to taste of God's great goodness in His Son Jesus Christ. I recommend it to anyone who wants to taste of His passion for God and Christ and also to anyone who is fanning their flame, fallen, tripped up or needs to return to their first love, this book is a heartfelt read.

With his customary directness, Spurgeon offers 365 devotions, meant to be read in the evening, and meditated on as one falls asleep. His words have a strange mix of compassion and harshness. He doesn't mince words - calling us to repent, to leave our sinful ways, and makes no allowance for the disobedience the rules our lives. At the same time, he also offers hope, in the reminder of the saving Love of God and the forgiveness found there. Worth reading, in every sense. I will most likely read this again in a few years.
There are few devotionals, which capture the essence of depth and truth, using a single verse a day. As you read, you can see why F.B. Meyer stated, "I went to hear Dr. Surgeon but instead I heard the voice of God". Spurgeon writes from his own experiences and insights received from the hand of God. An example of this, is the March 10th devotional. Spurgeon highlights Job 14:1, which states," of few days, and full of trouble. Charles Spurgeon writes, "If we would remember that all the trees of the earth are marked for the woodsman's ax, we would not be so ready to build our nests in them". He goes on to say, "There is a time appointed for weakness and sickness when we will have to glorify God by our suffering and not by earnest activity". Through out this devotional are "precious pearls of wisdom" to ponder, as we grow in the "wisdom and knowledge of God." I highly recommend Evening by Evening, for it's inspirational encouragement as we journey, day to day, through the struggles and troubles of living in a fallen world which groans and is in bondage to corruption and sin.
