He stumbles to the terminal gift shop, and demands the cashier point him to a payphone. As his life seeps away, Bernie calls Harry Fairchild, his old fraternity brother. Dying or not, he has a job to do.

He stumbles to the terminal gift shop, and demands the cashier point him to a payphone. Harry is a playboy, the scion of an oil-rich family known throughout California. Bernie was in Honolulu working for Harry's father, and he has a message to give the old man before he expires.

Charlotte Armstrong writes a tightly packed story. Everything comes together perfectly. I like the fact that she doesn’t leave loose ends.

Charlotte Armstrong (May 2, 1905 in Vulcan, Michigan - July 7, 1969 in Glendale, California) was one of the American Mistresses of the mystery story at the same time that the older Christie and Sayers, among others, were being joined by Allingham, Marsh, and their generation in the United Kingdom. This is one of her Edgar nominated novels, and a decidedly good one. In the scion of Great Wealth and a store clerk, we have a most satisfactory romantic element; in keeping with the Tradition, it is suspense not romance which takes center stage.
At the core of the suspense is the fate of a little girl of seven, who has never known her biological father, widowed and ailing, who has also sired the hero and his two very successful brothers (a physician and the Governor of his state). While the plot has its complications, it essentially revolves about the quest by different groups to find the youngster before the other group does. Murder, mayhem and intrigue are the tools of the nasty side, with both members of the Romantic Pair, being at different times, searchers and victims of the hostility of the other group.
It is a good book and should pleas devotees of the "classic" tradition. I should add, that the classic tradition is not to be identified solely with page after page of dull logical exposition.

Love the pacing, the suspense, and the different characters we meet along the way! CA is 1 of my favorite suspense authors, and for good reason!

I've read this book many times. First in 1960 or so. Each time it is fresh and fun. Characters are a good mix. I just read it again today and was as entertained as the first time.
Only complaint is the misspelled words in the Kindle version were somewhat interfering.
Thanks again Ms. Armstrong.

Quirky characters, good mystery. Delightful! The chase to find the correct piggy bank was wonderful. I will certainly be looking for more Charlotte Armstrong's books.

This was a book that didn't keep me involved as I read it. I like a book that is hard for me to put down and this wasn't it.

"The Gift Shop" is an excellent example of Ms. Armstrong's books that are finally available on Kindle. It's a light hearted and romantic adventure that travels the world to solve the mystery. Her's are older books without the blood and guts but with plenty of psychological elements, sometimes on the dark side. The Gift Shop is more on the action side but the characters are interesting and well developed as always.

old fashioned, cute mystery - very easy, enjoyable read. A time capsule of air travel and society in the 60's.
If you've never has the pleasure of reading her suspense novels, start with this one! Her books are comfort food year after year. Love having them on Kindle.
