Perhaps she knew she held a teapot and not a child, perhaps she didn’t. ket for her teapot child. Her broomstick thighs were exposed, her gnarly knees, knots of ankle, bony feet in trodden-down slippers. She’d embroidered that gown once with many roses. Couldn’t remember the needle or the thread, couldn’t remember now the purpose of a needle and thread, but remembered she liked that gown. Thump of boots on the veranda. She knew he was coming.

And when you read articles calling her one of Australia's most bewilderingly unsung literary talents, they really ain't kidding. She's got legions of fans, but where are the legions of critics declaring her the best thing since sliced bread/Tim Winton?

Joy Dettman was born in Echuca, Victoria, and now lives in Melbourne with her husband and Footrot, the do.

Not one of Joy Dettman's best books, took me awhile to get through it, as it was a bit Mills and Boonish

In the usual "Dettman" style, this book had me gripped from the first page to the last. There seems to be no limit to the variety of plots she can devise.
