Private investigator, Vic Warshawski is hired by her old friend Caroline to find out who her father is. Caroline’s mother is dying. Vic is pulled into an investigation that takes her back to her old neighborhood in South Chicago and soon finds that she is digging up information that puts her life in danger with a political boss, a mobster garbage king, and a very rich CEO. This is another page turner that I looked forward to reading.

Sara Paretsky is fantastic. This book has lot of characters, quite a bit about Chicago politics, Wrigley field, the Cubs and she goes into deep detail of all her destinations in and around Chicago. Her details mskes you feel you are right there with her, Mr. Contreras, and Peppy.

She never fails to give you a good read - I read some of her earlier works and then she fell off my radar when she was on a hiatus of sorts until I came across some of her books on a clearance table at a local bookstore - I bought one to catch up with her and was not disappointed, I then caught up the rest of the series with her Kindle editions. The only CON to her books is the higher than normal Kindle price - I wanted to finish the series and was glad I did BUT I feel she needs to get in line with her Kindle edition prices

Some have complained about her liberal views coming through the book - they are part of the character - I for one am glad to read something other than cookie cutter detective stories

Paretsky delivers. What starts off as an ordinary request, an atypical investigation for V.I. turns into something very powerful and engaging. We again get into the closet of V.I's past life and from that the tale is so unexpected, yet clear and clean. V.I has her hands full as she engages her own past demons and others to create a believable current day financial thriller that does not end in the expected way. It ends nonetheless with V.I showing courage, fortitude and patience. Good job.
