Piper Donovan/Wedding Cake Mysteries; Volume number 2. A Piper Donovan Mystery.

Piper Donovan isn't the average wedding cake baker. In fact she's only made one wedding cake before, but what a cake it was. On the basis of that one cake, she has been asked to come to Los Angeles and make a cake for Jillian Abernathy, director of Elysium. A trip to LA, a wedding cake, some acid in the face and a few murders are all ingredients in The Look of Love by Mary Jane Clark. Piper may not be a traditional wedding cake baker/decorator but she does have excellent skills.

Mary Jane Clark is an American author of two series of suspense novels. The Look of Love is her latest work from Wedding Cake mysteries. Her first twelve books are media thrillers influenced by her three decades of experience in broadcast journalism. Although the setup of Piper being asked to decorate a cake for a wedding seems very repetitive (throughout the series), the mystery aspects of the main plot are very well crafted.

The second installment of the Wedding Cake Mysteries, The Look of Love: A Piper Donovan Mystery, is a light, quick read just like the first book. I have to admit I was more in tune with the authors writing style this time around so I had a feeling about who the killer was about half way through.. and I ended up being correct. I don't think I was as impressed with the book as I was the first, but I did enjoy reading it.

In this second book, Piper finds herself in the middle of the drama once again. This time though, she has a little drama of her own - realizing that she might just have more than friendly feelings for FBI agent, Jack Lombardi. I really hope to see their relationship bloom in the next book.

I love that Mary Jane Clark includes social media in these books with Pipers Facebook and Twitter updates. It's very easy to relate to her character in a very real way because of details like this. I am also very happy that Piper is getting more involved in cake making/decorating. As I stated in my review of the first book, I love the whole bakery story, so I was thrilled to read that Piper is taking that on as another part of her life. I also get a kick out of the recipes at the end of each story. I will definitely be trying some of them out in my own kitchen!

I tried really hard to get into this book. I really did. But the character development between Jack and Piper just isn't there. Their relationship seemed more like an afterthought rather than an integral part of the story. I also don't get the whole Facebook thing but then I never have. It seemed to disrupt the flow of the story to stop and have Piper post on Facebook all the time.

But the premise of the story was good. I liked it enough to finish and it did keep my interest through to the end.

The characters are well-developed, and it's easy to feel like they're real people...until the end. When I finally got to the who-done-it part of the book, it felt like the author just wanted to finish. The murderer was caught, everyones happy, done! I had hoped that the characters' relationships would continue to develop and maybe there would be a hint of something to lead into the next book, but there was nothing. Sorry to say I won't be reading anymore of this series. I really like the characters but can't stand the endings.

I am truly enjoying the Piper Donovan series. I just finished reading this book..... The ending was a WOW moment... Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This book really delivered the message that all beauty is not on the outside. It also got the wicked stepmother theme covered. I thought the plot fell apart a bit at the end, but at least the potential boyfriend didn't save her from the evil beast so she would have to fall in love with him.
I sound as little more cynical than I felt about the book. It was not meant to be more thought provoking than any love story. I would still recommend it to romance mystery readers.

I did not care for this book. Too many characters, too many things happening at the same time and too many loose ends.

Totally enjoyed storyline another great book. Never disappointed and always in awe to get to the ending and find out who committed the crime
I do enjoy these books even if they're predictable. I am always a little disappointed that it has ended. Plus, the books all seem to end abruptly.
