Political control? You mean to another bunch of Ay-rabs? No, to us, said Miller. To the United States of America. If we’re to survive, we have to control the price of world oil, pegging it at a price we can afford, and that means controlling the government in Riyadh. This nightmare of being at the beck and call of a bunch of goatherds has gone on long enough.

Forsyth drops some of his characteristic deep background in favor of action. It is still smart, and definitely has plenty of twists and sweeping settings, but it is not the detailed travelogue his novels usually are. I chose to call it dark instead of suspenseful because of the path the plot takes - saying any more than that would be a spoiler. His books are not geared to happy endings so much as to a conclusion of the action. This one is a good example, with more accent on the action throughout.

Good plot that was well researched as one would expect from a master like Forsyth. I didn't like the phased out ending that left me wondering whether the Spanish solution for the lovers would cocntinue to be bliss. With such backgrounds of both, I would have preferred something else but I don't know what. The villians were a little unreal and rather quirky which doesn't reflect well on the selection or contacts of the American security services. But even with my inner critical thoughts, the master writer presented a good read backed by excellent research,

Frederick Forsyth is a genius with a pen. This particular endeavor wouldn't be my favorite, even though it pursues kidnapping with a different twist, deeper plot than usual and a few surprises. Compared to other writers of this generation, Forsyth still ranks number 1 in my book. He knows history, he understands how people think, and he does impeccable homework, no matter what the subject.

This did arrive super fast, but nowhere in the description did it mention this was the abridged version ...it did not mention it was the unabridged version either. So, I would say I'm a bit dossapointed in the product, though it seems to be in exactly the condition I expected when purchasing.
A well thought through and constructured story line. Forthyth's research is phenomenal and gives a stamp of authenticity to the book
