All That Remains Lyrics. All that remains Drowning in flames The same old story But the names have all been changed

All That Remains Lyrics. Just below the surface Of an ordinary town Burn the devils underground Murder fills the skies above My eyes upon the earth Why didn't I realize? See for the first time In my life defending. All that remains Drowning in flames The same old story But the names have all been changed. The fatal mistake, you made Was of all the hearts you'd slain How you left alive my bloody valentine. Aiming at the enemy I only smash the mirror Pluck out your wicked eyes See for the first time in your life defending.

In the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, little girls have started to disappear. The city is in hysterics. Parents are frantic, and the police are baffled. Thea Kelly is one of the shocked community members, witnessing the horror via the news on TV. She feels bad for the parents, but her home is protected and her neighborhood is safe. She isn't worried-until her own daughter, Alexa, goes missing. Days pass, then weeks and months. Alexa Kelly is not coming home. The realization is paralyzing, and Thea finds it almost impossible to go on. An entire year passes before the culprit is brought to justice, but there is no word on the whereabouts of Thea's daughter or whether she is alive or dead. It is possible that the kidnapper did not murder all the girls, but it looks as though Thea's daughter's location will remain a mystery forever. No longer able to remain in Dallas-surrounded by the memories of her little girl-Thea escapes to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she plans to start a new life, leaving the painful past behind. The healing process gradually begins when she meets new friends and embarks upon a new career. But is it possible to move on after the loss of a child, or will Thea always be haunted by the image of her little girl, reaching out to her?

"All that Remains" is a solid, impressive first novel. A thriller, mystery and novel of emotional healing, Melva Haggar Dye has done her homework on the disturbing issues surrounding child kidnappings, including the traits of perpetrators, direct victims and secondary victims. The primary antagonist, one Hurley Dobbs, is well delineated in a haunting portrait of psychopathology. Dye's protagonist, Thea, and her supporting-role investigator, Cal, are also well developed.

By way of disclosure, I am acquainted with the author, I learned of the book's publication by happenstance and purchased my copy of the book (along with a second copy for a mutual acquaintance). While I might not otherwise have been aware of the novel, I read it with relish and was struck by the quality with which Dye described and traced the crime(s) surrounding the kidnapping--actually a primary and secondary kidnapping--of Thea's daughter. The police-procedural aspects and geographic descriptions (of Greece and Santa Fe, in particular) are also handled with a high-level of skill. I suspect, however, that the overwhelming majority of Dye's readers will be inspired by Thea's journey to emotional closure and healing.

The publisher's blurbs imply that Dye is working on another novel. Readers of "All that Remains" will look forward to reading it!
