But Germaine and Burckhardt also include recipes for pavlova, anzac biscuits, lamingtons, and other uniquely Australian treats. Oddly, no recipe is provided for meat pies, although this standard food is no more difficult to prepare than kiwi tarts or egg and bacon pie. As is true for all the titles in the series, many of the recipes require extensive adult supervision and advanced cooking skills. While it is geared to children it is also excellent for adults who are just starting to cook.

Series: Easy Menu Ethnic Cookbooks. Library Binding: 47 pages. Publisher: Lerner Pub Group (May 1, 1996). This is more of an American cookbook than an Irish one with recipes for corned beef and sweet and sour brussel sprouts. There are other recipes, such as Colcannon, which likely appear in your other cookbooks with Irish recipes. It's telling that the author an Austrian born, Bavarian trained American. It was interesting though to see the remarkably familiar Nore Salmon Cakes - a recipe almost identical to that served by families with Irish surnames throughout the South, but called "Southern Seafood Patties" or "Southern Salmon Patties.

Just wish they would put out regional American cooking books as well.

Good book! Some of the recipes are a little different from what would be expected, but still delicious nevertheless!

This is a good introduction to Australian cooking, while very similar to American cooking has a stronger Asian influence. While it is geared to children it is also excellent for adults who are just starting to cook. This version is the newer one & I prefer the older one (very similar but I just prefer the recipe selection) I used this series of cookbooks for years with my Girl Scout troop with great success. Contents include:

INTRODUCTION holidays & festivals * the land & the history * the food

BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE CAREFUL COOK * cooking terms * cooking utensils * special ingredients * healthy & low-fat cooking tips * metric conversion chart

AN AUSTRALIAN MENU

LUNCH fresh fruit cup * pineapple fruit cup * egg & bacon pie

AFTERNOON TEA tomato & mint sandwich * tea * Anzac biscuits

DINNER creamy pumpkin soup * beef curry * crunchy fish fillets * sunshine salad with vinaigrette dressing

DESSERTS glazed kiwi tart * lamingtons * bread & butter custard

HOLIDAY & FESTIVAL FOOD roast leg of lamb * roast vegetables * rich gravy * mint sauce * pavlova * damper * macadamia nut bread

If you want to really know if this book is for you, go to your local library. If they don't have a copy there is always the option of the Inter-Library Loan procedure (books usually take about 3 weeks to arrive). I almost always preview books from the library before purchasing ... it has saved a lot of disappointment.

This book is not really geared toward children, but everyone. It does include a basic history of Australia. Its a great book and the recipes are easy to follow. I made the Anzac biscuits with no problem, and the ingredients were easy to find at any grocery store. The author was born in Australia.
