Description

Benedict Flynn has rewritten a number of classic for kids, specifically for audio recordings, and he does a great job. The stories are not dumbed-down or Disney-fied.

Benedict Flynn has rewritten a number of classic for kids, specifically for audio recordings, and he does a great job. The reader on Robin Hood, John McAndrew, is quite good and the story is accompanied by sound effects (like the sound of someone walking in the snow and the thwock of an arrow hitting its mark) and classical music. Logan, who discovered pirates at 5 and is now onto knights at 6, loved this story.

As with previous reviewers, I'm an adult & I love this version of Robin Hood. (Had it existed when I was a boy, I would have played it until it wore out, I suspect.) Benedict Flynn's narrative is distinctive, filled with small details that make the characters their own individuals, and places the listener right into the semi-historic, semi-legendary setting from the first. Reader John McAndrew is a marvel, using accents & dialect with the skills of a superb actor, never overdoing it, but enhancing the individuality of each character all the more. This truly is Theater of the Imagination, enabling listeners to envisage the scenes without any effort: they spring fully to life in the mind's eye of their own accord. This may be a retelling of an oft-told tale, but it feels & sounds original -- quite happily recommended!

A good story rendition on audio. One of my boys is very sensitive to violence of any kind (he has autism) so this turned out to be something he can't listen to yet - but my other kids enjoyed it. There wasn't a lot of violence, just what would be in the book and nothing graphic, my son is just can't handle that. I will be ordering more from this series since we enjoyed this one and the quality was good. Great for kids - if you have a sensitive child, maybe listen to it first before you let them hear it.

I bought this audioook for our girls (aged 7 and 9) to listen to on long journeys. We enjoy listening to it also and it certainly does make the journeys more bareable. Our [...]particularly loves this audiobook, in her words "it's awesome, even though it's a bit sad at the end when he dies."
I feel it's better than simply watching a DVD all the time. At least they are using their imaginations to visualize the images and they are often inspired to sit and draw what they have imagined. I heartily recommend this audiobook.

I am an adult and I loved it.

Much better than listening to talk radio while driving.
