Sweet Dreams: Philosophical Obstacles to a Science of Consciousness is a 2005 book by the American philosopher Daniel Dennett, based on the text of the Jean Nicod lectures he gave in 2001. Dennett extends his well noted attack on the philosophical notion of qualia by using the metaphor of philosophical zombies as well as addressing many popular thought experiments.

As, night after night, she dreams of the blaze that killed her parents, Jan suspects that someone murdered her parents and is soon drawn in her sleep to the sites of a series of midnight fires around town. Original.

One of my favorite books ever, out of print for many years. I was so happy to find it in e-book format. I reread it and then loaned it to my best friend, who loved it too. It's hard to describe. A man is daydreaming as he waits at a stoplight. The light changes, he drives on, and ... is he dreaming? dead? It's mostly a comedy, but there's enough going on under the surface to keep me interested.

Strange and unpredicatable, in a very good way.

Sweet Dreams has long been one of my favorite books, one of the few I've ever cared to reread. The opening section, in which the protagonist seamlessly glides into what we come to understand is heaven, and then discovers its many delights (being able to fly if you want to...or not, 5-star restaurants) is without equal in anything else I've read: elegant, light, perfectly executed, completely delightful. Then, as the story develops, the protagonist goes through apprenticeship, love, early success and fame, midlife crisis, and resolution. It's always done with a light and comic touch, yet deals with profound questions. How Frayn was able to conceive of the story and carry it off is remarkable. It's a crime that this book is not in print, particularly when writers like Anthony Burgess and Margaret Drabble have praised it as one of the best British novels of the late 20th century. Hunt for a used copy--your search will be well repaid!

Without foaming at the mouth it takes down Modern Man a few pegs, without any viciousness. If I were to sum up the book, it has the same uncomfortable quality that bad early poems have. Howard's dreams are quite modest - certainly Nietszche would disapprove - but he has every right to them.
