Youth is Wasted on the Young Being grown up is a drag. The Xanth novels are a quick, fun and funny read. Great starter books for young fantasy readers. There is a ton of them and you can pick up any of them and start. The Good Magician makes an appearance in every Xanth book. That's how most books start - a character has a problem in their lives that they need to see him about.

In all fairness to His Grace (Piers Anthony), fourteen years separate this book from the first in the series so he probably felt the need, at the time(1990), to refresh his audience with details from the earlier books. This book is kind of like a hamburger in that the bun represents the new story while the meat is a massive rehash of the first thirteen books.

Later they had moved to New Castle Zombie in southern Xanth, which had been fine. She and Hiatus had had separate rooms, and had teased the poor zombies mercilessly. Somehow it seemed that the best of her life had been used up in childhood.

I was a fan of the series until the last few books; this one took the cake, and I am DONE.
First of all, you can safely skip about 70% of the book if you have read the series up till this point. It almost entirely rehashes the previous books in boring, droning format through Magician Humfrey. Much more entertaining to read the books, the narration of known things was awful and not even particularly interesting in the rehash.
Second of all, Piers Anthony may not exactly be a champion of women, but this book is so baldly sexist that it was absolutely impossible to ignore, as it sometimes was in the earlier books. Example (summary of the entire book actually): "Lacuna knew that women who hit 40 without being married or having children were utterly worthless and might as well not have lived. So she set out to snag the man that she lost; such loss destroyed her life since women only exist to get married and have children." Women who are independent are - quite literally - portrayed as demons.
Third of all, even when things ARE happening, the writing has become frankly unexciting. There is very little action, which was often a highlight of the previous books. Humfrey is a decent enough character, but this book points up his flaws and he's not a very good character for his own book.

So my suggestion: don't bother with this one. I have no idea if the rest of the series is better, this book stopped me from trying.

Question Quest still gets five stars but if you are reading the Xanth books back-to-back this one is a bit repetitive. I love the new plot but it was burdensome reading a rehash of what I've been reading for the past few months. Of course, he wasn't writing this for folks like me who treat the story like one big book. He was helping people catch up with this mammoth world and its fascinating characters. I read a lot of good books in college and graduate school but NOTHING as fascinating or rewarding as the Xanth series (hence the five star review).

I really like how puns are used by the Author, "Piers Anthony". I love this series so much, I have purchased all the books of this series, as I have of, "Incarnations of Immortality". The Incarnations of Immortality" is the first book of that series, as of "Bearing an hourglass", "With a tangled skein", "Wielding a red sword", "Being a green mother. If you are into fantasy, and reading of literal puns, you should love this book.

I like Anthony's fantasy series, but this one was just a recap of others. If you haven't read the others in the series, it would be interesting to bring you up to date, but otherwise it just goes over the same things. Not one of his better books.

Piers Anthony is my favorite author and Xanth is my favorite series. I am re-reading the entire series over again and it is just as great as the first time! These books have gotten me through some really bad times in my life and I'm so grateful to have them.

This is by far the best book I ever read. If you haven't read any of the series you can still read this and have a blast. It's so fun.

Great book. I've always enjoyed these books when my husband gifted me with the first novel. I've been slow reading, but I love going to an alternate place every now and again to escape. Xanth provides a great get away. Thanks Mr. Anthony
I have enjoyed all of the Zanth books. I wish there were more.
