Barbara Leonie Picard (Adapter), Joan Kiddell-Monroe (Illustrator). The second part, Folk-Tales, is filled with short stories where the main message seems to be that the cunning and quick witted will always win, especially against the proud. Not exactly the best morality message, but it is fun to see wits in action.

Barbara Leonie Picard (17 December 1917 – 15 December 2011) was a British writer of children's books, known best for historical fiction and for retellings of ancient myths and medieval legends. She also wrote original fairy tales. Three of her books were commended runners up for the annual British Carnegie Medal, one collection of her fairy tales and two historical novels.

Barbara Leonie Picard, Joan Kiddell-Monroe (Illustrator). France is full of folk-tales and fairy stories, heroic, courtly, plain and coloured. Traditional stories are here, legends from the provinces, courtly tales of the middle ages, and epic hero tales - and it is interesting to note how the quality of the stories, the particular regional and period flavor, differs from, for example, the collections of myths and legends from the British Isles in previous books in this series.

France is full of folk tales and fairy stories. From the last stand of the knights, Roland and Oliver, through the legend of how the great stones of Britanny came into being, and on to the fairy story of the Mouse-Princess, there is something here for everyone. Tales of the French epic heroes, courtly tales from the middle ages, and various legends from the French provinces are retold by a distinguished storyteller.

Great seller. Good antique book, which is one of the things I love about it. Well written and easy to read.
