Isabella Valancy Crawford (25 December 1846 – 12 February 1887) was an Irish-born Canadian writer and poet. She was one of the first Canadians to make a living as a freelance writer. Crawford is increasingly being viewed as Canada's first major poet. She is the author of "Malcolm's Katie," a poem that has achieved "a central place in the canon of nineteenth-century Canadian poetry.

Poems by Isabella Valancy Crawford. In 1858, the family emigrated to Upper Canada and settled at Paisley, on the Saugeen river. The village was but just struggling out of the embrace of the forest, and it was here that the little Isabella, who had developed into a shy and studious child, blue-eyed and with a beautiful profile, beheld the practical results of those harbingers of civilization–the axe, the plough and the hammer–whose work she afterward depicted in Malcolm's Katie. Their children's education was conducted by both Dr. and Mrs. Crawford.

Isabella Valancy Crawford 1850-1887. Irish-born Canadian poet, novelist, short story writer, and fairy tale writer. Crawford published one book of poetry in her short lifetime, Old Spookses' Pass, Malcolm's Katie, and Other Poems (1884), in addition to numerous pieces in magazines and newspapers. Her work features social criticism and an emerging Canadian nationalism.

Isabella Valancy Crawford, major 19th-century Canadian poet and one of the first important woman poets in Canada. She is especially noted for her vivid descriptions of the Canadian landscape. Details of Crawford’s life are sketchy. The daughter of a physician who emigrated to Canada in 1858, she spent most of her girlhood in the picturesque Kawartha Lakes district of Ontario. She received an excellent education at home and was widely read in the classics and in French and Italian literature.
