The Milepost: Trip Planner For Alaska&Western Canada: Spring '97 Spring '98 (49th Ed). by. Kris Valencia Graef. The maps are exceptional and the abundance of information remarkable, making this the most irreplaceable of guides for a trip up north.

Originally a logbook about the Alaska-Canada Highway, this book has grown over the years to be a comprehensive guidebook on Alaska, NW Canada, and the Alcan Highway. It's useful no matter what your style of visiting Alaska. I like the guide even though I haven't driven the (marathon) Alcan Highway (I've used airlines, ferrys, trains, and other public transportation).

I read other guides in preparation, but this is the only one I bring with me during the trip.
This book is packed with detail about not only what to see, but important mudane details about gas stations, lodging, stores, and ferry schedules for each locality.
Wait until March to get the current edition of Milepost, if you don't need it right away.

After just returning from driving around Alaska for one month, (2005) this book is invaluable. Advertisements are plainly marked and information is very useful. It is very nice to be able to know what some of the sights are along the way, where good viewpoints are and where there are picnic areas and rest areas. Only negative is we used the book so much, pages started falling out.

This should be the first purchase for anyone contemplating driving Alaska (and BC, and Yukon) highways.

This is the very best tour guide for Alaska as well routes to get there from the USA. It sat on my lap every inch of the way once we crossed into Canada. We traveled in our
ClassC Motorhome. We would have missed many attractions, camp grounds, shopping areas, etc. if we didn't have this book. It has a wealth of information including the ferry schedules for travel to the this wonderful state. Every year a new Milepost is printed and updated all information year to year. An absolute must for anyone going there.

There are lots of miles of roads in AK, and driving them can be a bit boring. Unless you have the milepost to guide you. There are interesting things happening all along the roadside, and a long road trip will whiz by when you are aware of what you are seeing, or can anticipate what is coming up around the bend.
Well worth the investment.

I ordered this Magazine for pre-planning a trip to Alaska. I have ordered the 2012 Mile post Magizine that will come out in March 2012. The 2005 Milepost has been great for pre-planning the trip.
love the book now to get on the road .
