The map is great in it's detail and its durability, but it's not really any better than the free one they'll give you at the park entrance.
When I went to Bryce Canyon and Zion Nation Parks last year, I bought the National Geographic maps ahead of time and they helped me plan out the hikes to do at each. Both of those maps had pretty good descriptions for most of the hiking trails (length, height, level of difficulty, condition/type of trail, what to expect to see, time you should expect to take.) We were able to plan ahead which trails to take, which 2 could be done in the same day, and in what order to do them in. It was great.

So, when we were planning out next hiking trip (that included going to Redwood, Mount Rainier, Olympic, Crater Lake, and Mount St. Helen), we immediately ordered this map to help us plan. This time around we had to not only figure out what trails to do in each park but compare the trails of all the parks to help us figure out how to split 2 weeks between 5 parks. We thought that all the maps would have the same info for the hiking trails as Zion & Bryce Canyon had. They don't. This map was useless for the purpose we wanted it. Instead of getting the info from a single reliable source, we had to trust to the internet. This didn't help much. Though there are a lot of posting about the trails, they're all very opinionated instead of factual. They described how beautiful the trail was, but would leave off the trail's length, height, level of difficulty, condition/type of trail, what to expect to see, or time it should take.

So if you're looking for hiking info, don't get this map. Just wait until you get there and go right to the info station and talk with a park ranger. It doesn't help planning ahead of time, but it's a lot better than taking the internet's advice.

Rad map of the whole area... I went on an overnight back country camping down along the river. Redwood is kinda a small national park compared to what I'm used to but thats kinda cool in a way too. The gravel bar that is for back country camping can be a little rough/rocky, so I'm glad I had not only a sleeping bag, but also this therma rest foam pad from REI to buffer the gravel a bit. Probably even beter if you have a more expensive inflatable pad but I'm too frugal to invest in all that. This whoule are of Nor Cal is pretty rad though, little state parks on the beach, random casinos, easy to get hike.

This map is awesome!!! It is waterproof to start, which makes it innately more difficult to tear than a normal paper map. We took this map when my boyfriend and I traveled to the Redwoods and it was incredibly helpful, and fun to look at! We have it hanging on our wall currently & I highly recommend it even if you aren't travelling immediately. I am obsessed with the redwood forests so I probably would have bought it anyway even though I recently moved further away. Get this map! You won't regret it. Thanks Nat Geo, you're a star.

Would prefer a smaller size, perhaps a pack of 2 or 3 maps for the park. The size, while ok for planning, makes it unwieldy on the trail. as the print size is too small and the physical map size is much too large. I would think most people need info on the trail they are hiking and all the other info while on that specific hike is not needed.

I had no clue this was water and tearproof! This is a wonderful map and incredibly detailed. It will be perfect for my backpacking trip.

We recently visited the Redwoods - this map showed us before we left that there were actually several places to visit. Once we had the basic information I researched more online, but this gave us good starting points.
One of the best maps of area, provides good detail on trails and area roads along with elevation. This map is only surpassed by the map series created by redwood hikes press. Advantage of the trais illustrated map is the area is all on one map. I have lots of maps of the area and glad I got this one.
